Abstract

The prolongation of education and the flexibilization of labor markets mean that the subsequent stages of early adult life and social roles are overlapping (Wyn, Dwyer 2002; Mayer 2005; Biggart, Walther 2006; Kohli 2007; Du Bois-Reymond 2009; Heinz 2009; Mary 2014). It is more and more often that young people reach adulthood in a non-linear way, experiencing returns to stages or situations from the past, which has been described in the literature as “yo-yo transition” (Du Bois-Reymond, Lopez Blasco 2003; Heinz 2009; Walther 2009; Hörschelmann 2011; Borlagdan 2015). The “yo-yo-ization of transitions” also concerns the school-to work transition, which is more and more extended over time, diverse, and difficult to predict (Walther 2006). One of the significant phenomena accompanying contemporary young adults getting into the labor market is international mobility (King 2018; Robertson, Harris, Baldassar 2018), which significantly influences the shape of educational and professional paths of young people.
The purpose of this article is to answer the question about the role of international migration in the occurrence of the transitional yo-yo effect. Based on the case studies of migrants’ educational and occupational paths, transitions of young people to the domestic and foreign labor markets will be presented both in the objective and subjective dimensions. The qualitative adaptation of social sequence analysis (Cornwell 2015) will be used as the data analysis method.
