The paper presents experiences and observations concern the positive and negative circumstances of the social sciences representatives involvement in research conducted for public institutions in Poland. The following topics were discussed: the clear definition of the researcher role in those projects, responsibility for actions taken and limitations of research freedom. Author presents dilemmas concerning the relation between researcher and order-givers as well as persons being tested. The unclear status of scientific research in projects conducted by public institutions is also discussed. Finally the pros and cons are presented to give the opportunity for further discussion on involvement of scientists in public projects.
