Abstract

The present paper tends to analyze the procedure of intersemiotic translation of ancient myth of Phaedra, in its written version by Euripides (Hippolytus), into the contemporary stage production of Phaedra by Maja Kleczewska. The analysis of the performance is preceded by the extended introduction regarding reception of myth in general, and reception of Phaedra myth in particular. In this context, theories of Hans Blumenberg and Gilbert Durand are recalled in order to establish the understanding of myth’s transformation. Myth of Phaedra is scrutinized diachronically and synchronically within the background of Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s idea of body and sexuality. The theatre production is explored with reference to its textual basis (Euripides, Seneca, Tasnádi, Enquist) on the one hand, and in relation to the contemporary theories of actor’s body (Erika Fischer-Lichte, Hans-Thies Lehmann). The overarching goal of the paper is to analyze the procedure of intersemiotic translation of the mythical core of Phaedra myth (defined in terms of body) into actor’s body on stage (defined in its phenomenology).

    Assistant Professor. She was awarded her PhD by the University of Lodz, Classics Faculty and MA by the Institute of Contemporary Culture (theatre and drama theory) at the same university. Author of a book Phaedra – Ethics of Emotions in the tragedies of Euripides, Seneca and Racine (Peter Lang 2012). She is co-editor of the volume Ancient Myths in the Making of Culture (Peter Lang 2014) and Metamorphoses of Ancient Myths (Peter Lang 2017). Her authored book Stage Metamorphoses of Myth. Polish Theatre of XXI century from cultural perspective and co-authored volume Ancient theatre and drama in the works of scholiasts will be published in 2018.

    Full Professor, the chief editor of Collectanea Philologica, a member of The Committee on Ancient Culture of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), The Classical Association, The Scientific Commitee of Łódź, the scholar of Fondation Hardt pour L`Etude de L`Antiquité Classique, Vandoeuvres-Genève and The Lanckorońscy Foundation. Interested in Greek theatre and drama (mainly Euripides), Greek philosophy and the reception of Antiquity in Italian culture. The author of many articles, including Polish and Italian monographs about the works of Euripides. For her achievements she was awarded, inter alia, with the medal of The Commission of National Education and many others. She was also prized by the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
