About the Journal

The journal RURAL PERIODICALS [ZESZYTY WIEJSKIE] was established in 1998 as a scientific journal of the Interdisciplinary Rural Research Team at the University of Lodz. Currently, it is published by Lodz University Press and is affiliated with the Faculty of Philosophy and History of the University of Lodz. From its beginning, it has been an interdisciplinary journal.

For almost a quarter of a century, the journal has contributed to deepening knowledge about the problems of the countryside, whose role in shaping the socio-cultural identity of many societies is enormous. About 500 authors have published their texts in ZESZYTY WIEJSKIE. Two bibliographies of the journal’s contents have been published: for the years 1998–2010 (in 2011 in book form) and for the years 2011–2014 (in volume XXI of the journal). ZESZYTY WIEJSKIE is an interdisciplinary, scholarly annual that is unique in Poland. It focuses on the countryside from the entire spectrum of phenomena and processes that occur within it.

The journal, fitting into the paradigm of rural studies, enables analysis of all past and present social, cultural, economic and political phenomena in the context of rural areas in Poland, Europe and the world. The authors and contributors of ZESZYTY WIEJSKIE represent the fields of the humanities, social sciences, agricultural sciences as well as engineering and technical sciences. The diversity of substantive perspectives makes ZESZYTY WIEJSKIE open for discussion about the countryside, which is not limited to a single discipline.

The thematic layout of ZESZYTY WIEJSKIE allows for the inclusion of historical and ethnographic sources, both primary and secondary; it provides an opportunity for polemics and monitoring current publications and events that concern rural issues.

The journal is included in the current list of scientific journals and peer-reviewed materials from international conferences drawn up by the Minister of Education and Science. A publication in ZESZYTY WIEJSKIE scores 70 points.
