Żywot Mateusza (1968) directed by Witold Leszczyński is an unusual film in Polish cinematography. Polish and world critics pointed out that the film was different from the standard repertoire proposals: the extraordinary effects of the cinematographer’s work were emphasized, and the talent and strength of the performance of Franciszek Pieczka, the main actor, were highlighted. One reviewer even called it a masterpiece. The presented text is an interpretation of the film after over 50 years, an attempt to check its relevance. The author reveals the rarely emphasized mystery and sacred dimension of the film (in sense of Eliade). He indicates the separateness and non-contemporaneity of the title character. He analyzes several important film frames, trying to highlight the most important features of Mateusz’s worldview. Ultimately, he shows that a fundamental philosophical question is expressed through his lips, which forces us to reflect on the supposed obviousness of our relationship with reality.
