This text introduces a thematic issue of “Przegląd Socjologii Jakościowej” devoted to fashion understood as a complex social phenomenon. The authors begin with a critical reflection on the marginalisation of fashion studies and the dominance of androcentric and Eurocentric approaches, calling for a shift towards contemporary, cognitively productive perspectives that are particularly useful for qualitative research. Fashion is conceptualised both as a specific form of social action and as a system of institutions that produces meanings, practices, and social relations. Drawing on Y. Kawamura’s concept of fashion-ology, the authors treat fashion as a relatively autonomous social system linked to economic, political, and cultural processes. The articles collected in this issue examine transformations in clothing practices, the significance of visual materials, the relationship between fashion and social memory, as well as new methodological approaches to the study of textiles and fashion photography, with a particular focus on social experience and the role of fashion in the construction of meanings and identities.
