Abstract

This paper analyzes the complex nature of relationships co-created within participatory action research. Drawing from personal experience in the field, the author uncovers new meanings of participation and examines relational vulnerability and its dynamics embedded in the engaged relationship co-created with one of the participants. The text highlights the transformative potential of vulnerability, in which experiences of hurt and powerlessness can lead to strength, life wisdom, and empowerment. At the same time, the article draws attention to the emotional risks and ethical dilemmas inherent in participatory research, raising key questions about the balance between support and the potential for emotional harm. Through an autoethnographic approach, the author explores how moments of relational rupture, such as a participant’s sudden withdrawal, can become turning points for reflecting on the nature of participatory research and the interpersonal connections formed within it. Ultimately, the author argues that while participatory research carries significant risks, it also offers profound opportunities for shared understanding, growth, and empowerment.
