Abstract

Polish universities, following into the footsteps of solutions common in Anglo- Saxon countries and also as a result of institutionally introduced requirements (e.g. by the National Science Centre), have for several years been introducing ethical committees into the process of evaluating research projects. This type of verification of research projects is much more common in psychology than in sociology or other social sciences and humanities. In sociology, they are not yet compulsory in the Polish context, but as one can assume, they will soon become necessary for all researchers. In this article, I show that ethics committees are not a good enough ethical support tool for social scientists, and they do not fully fulfil their role in supporting the research process. I also reflect on other solutions that may support researchers in their ethical decisions during fieldwork, such as supervision or intervision. This kind of support for researchers is undoubtedly needed, but it should not be another institutional requirement, but an actual form of support for research activities in the field.
