The article presents traditions, conditions and methods of peat extraction in Woźniki – a locality situated about 10 kilometres from Radomsko in the Łódzkie Voivodeship. The issue of peat extraction has been extended to questions related to customs and culture of the local population. Moreover, the author describes the proprietary, economic, topographic and toponomastic issues. The paper has been mainly elaborated on the basis of stories of living village inhabitants. Peat as heating material has been ousted by coal, wood, gas and electricity. Presumably there is only one inhabitant in Woźniki who still continues quarrying this raw material.
