Abstrakt

The collection of photographs “The working class in the 19th and 20th century” located in the science archive at the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Łódź has been transferred to a digital repository. Having been for various reasons removed from private albums and from their owners, these photographs are an element of cultural heritage, rooted in the past and referring to the history of a concrete milieu (the working class). They are considered to be worth preserving and passing on to future generations as part of cultural heritage. My article describes how the status of these photographs was changing, and presents initiatives and actions that centred on this collection or referred to it, and that contributed to the evolution of its historical value.
