Abstract

This article discusses the results of qualitative research conducted with the intention of analyzing the area of experiences resulting from the death of a loved one, responses to it, and the way of coping with the loss. The research was based on 28 letters written by women aged 21–89 and addressed to the deceased loved ones. More than half of them were women exactly 23 years old. In most cases, the letters were addressed to the authors’ deceased grandmothers. The data was collected using an online platform, and their qualitative analysis was supported by the Atlas.ti.8 program. As a result of the qualitative interpretation of the content of the letters, three dimensions were distinguished referring to the strategy of coping with the death of a loved one: preserving the image of the deceased as they were in life, perceiving the presence of the deceased in the earthly dimension, and imagining his or her eternal life. In the narrators’ accounts, one can see the perspective of recognizing death both on an emotional and intellectual level. They also express the need to recall the memories of the deceased and the desire for their continued presence. A possible goal of each of these mechanisms is to become accustomed to the loss of loved ones, which is essential in the grieving process.

Joanna Kajko-Rykalska, Akademia WSB w Dąbrowie Górniczej

Joanna Kajko-Rykalska – holds a MA in psychology from the University of Silesia in Katowice. Apart from her work at a hospital, she also holds a position of lecturer at the University of Security in Gliwice. She is currently completing a specialization in clinical psychology and is working on her doctoral dissertation. The scope of postgraduate studies that she completed covers pedagogical qualifications, special education, family therapy, and neuropsychology. Her interests include: mediation, neurodevelopmental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, and developmental psychology.
Anna Duraj, Akademia WSB w Dąbrowie Górniczej

Anna Duraj – holds a MA in the field of mathematics in finance and economics from the University of Silesia in Katowice. She is also a graduate of the Cracow University of Technology and the College of Family Theology. She has completed numerous postgraduate studies in the fields of physics, oligophrenopedagogy, early school and preschool teaching, and is currently working on a doctoral dissertation at the WSB University in Dabrowa Gornicza. Her interests include: alternative teaching methods and the subject of family and education.

Dagmara Górecka has a MA in psychology, and is currently pursuing PhD studies in pedagogy at the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the WSB University in Dabrowa Gornicza. Her research interests fall within narrative and biographical research.

Barbara Tkocz has a MA in care and educational pedagogy from the Faculty of Pedagogy and Psychology at the University of Silesia in Katowice. Currently, she is a PhD student at WSB University in Dabrowa Gornicza, and specializes in social pedagogy and theory of education.
