Abstract

The aim of the text is to present the activities of seniors – residents of rural areas, as well as different obstacles typical for this living environment. The study was conducted using a collective case study with an in-depth interview (Stake 2009). The qualitative strategy enables presentation of the respondents’ individual experiences related to old age in the context of opportunities and limitations. The study covers 12 cases – native residents (aged 67-80) of villages located in different regions of Poland. The study shows that seniors in rural regions face various limitations to their activities. Most of the respondents do not remain passive in their old age and – despite difficulties – engage in activities towards self-development and activation of other seniors. However, some measures should be implemented to increase the availability of activities for senior citizens in their place of residence.

Jolanta Maćkowicz, University of the National Education Commission, Krakow

Jolanta Maćkowicz is an Associate Professor (PhD with habilitation) at the University of the National Education Commission, Kraków. Her research focus on social, educational and gerontological issues. She is a member of the Gerontology Section of the Committee on Pedagogical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Association of Polish Gerontologists, Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse at Durham University, and a national representative in the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA). An independent expert of the European Commission, a reviewer in the scientific research program Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe, as well as reviewer of publications from the ISI Master Journal List.

Joanna Wnęk-Gozdek, University of the National Education Commission, Krakow

Joanna Wnęk-Gozdek, PhD – pedagogist, sociologist, psychotherapist. She specializes in pedagogy and social gerontology as well as modern didactics. Since 2016, she has been researching the social capital of long-lived persons. She is a member of the Social Pedagogy Section of the Committee on Pedagogical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Association of Polish Gerontologists and the Polish Psychiatric Association.

Ewa Śliwa, University of the National Education Commission, Krakow

Ewa Śliwa, PhD – pedagogist and sociologist. In her research, she focuses on biographical patterns of long-lived persons as well as the ability to engage in close relationships and social relations in the light of dynamic societal changes.
