The paper presents the detective novels of Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (1939–2003) who represents the generation of Spanish writers disillusioned with democratic transition in Spain in the seventies of the twentieth century and who is the author of the most important crime series written in Spanish. The author of the article carries out the analysis of the Carvalho series which is a culturalist and generational manifesto that exemplifies the original transformation of crime fiction formula. The article seeks to expose these characteristics of the work by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán that might become an obstacle in the process of transferring the novels to the context of a foreign culture.
