The study is a multi-contextual review of the recollective essay by Piotr Matywiecki, entitled Old Edifice (Stary Gmach, Warsaw 2016). Not only do Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Koschany and Anita Jarzyna discuss the biographical dimension of the text devoted to the former premises of the Library of the University of Warsaw, where the author – a recognised poet and expert on Warsaw – worked for many years, but they also focus on another, more universal aspect of his deliberations, which tell a story about the departure of a certain intellectual generation – about an intellectual ethos and its genius loci on the map of Warsaw. At the same time, the reviewers emphasise and thematise the essential meaning of the essayistic form which favours erudite digressions and the composition of the book that is, to a great extent, subordinated to the logic of the depicted space and its spectral afterimages.Downloads
