Abstract

The Polish traveler and diplomat Marcin Broniowski (died on September 21^st, 1592) was the author of the work Tartariae descriptio (written in 1578), containing an interesting description of sixteenth-century Crimea, as well as the Crimean Khanate. On the basis of new discoveries in the Polish archives I reconstructed not only many basic elements of Marcin Broniowski’s biography, but also the exact chronology of all his visits to Crimea. My observations allow me to better describe Marcin Broniowski as a Polish diplomat and envoy. In the next three sections of my article, I intend to discuss all early modern editions and translations of Broniowski’s Tartariae descriptio, as well as an influence of this work on the knowledge about Eastern Europe and the formation of European geographical thought.

Mikhail Kizilov, doktor filozofii w zakresie historii nowożytnej, orientalista, tłumacz, autor ponad 130 książek i artykułów w ośmiu językach (angielskim, niemieckim, francuskim, hebrajskim, tureckim, rosyjskim itd.). Laureat Międzynarodowej Nagrody Stowarzyszenia Bibliotek Żydowskich (2012). Ostatnio (wspólnie z Grigorijem Bondarenko) opublikował monografię pt. Staroobrzędowcy i Żydzi: Trzysta lat obok siebie (Старообрядцы и евреи: Триста лет рядом, Moskwa 2024). Od roku 2022 realizuje projekt badawczy pt. „The Karaites, the Jews and the Nazis in Europe and the Occupied USSR during the Second World War and the Holocaust”.
