Abstract

Bishop Władysław Goral is one of the 108 beatified Polish martyrs of World War II. As an auxiliary bishop of Lublin, he was sentenced by a German Nazi court to death in 1939, which was subsequently commuted to life imprisonment. In view of the incomplete source data, it was assumed, after long scholarly discussion, that his death occurred between February and April 1945 in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, where he was imprisoned for more than five years. This assumptionis challenged by a newly discovered document from German archives, namely a testimony of Hans Appel, a fellow inmate at Sachsenhausen, who was allegedly taken with Bishop Goral to Ravensbrück concentration camp on April 21, 1945. This article verifies the value of the newly found source. As a result, a hypothesis that Bishop Goral was murdered at Ravensbrück between April 21 and 29, 1945 was put forward, and arguments were made for the new circumstances of his death.
