The Six-Day War of June 1967 marked a turning point in Egypt’s modern history, exposing the weaknesses of Gamal Abdel Nasser’s authoritarian system. The military defeat against Israel triggered a deep political and social crisis, forcing leadership changes within the army and a re-evaluation of state governance. Although Nasser briefly resigned, he retained power through massive popular support, leading to a more centralized and autocratic regime. Limited political and military reforms were introduced to restore stability. The war also marked Egypt’s shift from pan-Arabism toward national pragmatism, laying the groundwork for the transformations that continued under Anwar Sadat in the 1970s.
