Abstract

Webtoons are a type of digital comics, which creation began in the early 2000s in South Korea. The term describing works of this type originated from a combination of the two words "web" and "cartoon". The works in this format have a vertical layout of content to make them easier to read on mobile devices. In addition, they contain colourful graphics and an uncomplicated text layer. Chapters of each title are published serially, generally once a week. This article aims to present the issue of webtoons and their industry in South Korea. The information included in the publication allows to conclude that the market in question is one of the central sectors of local cultural production.
