Abstrakt

Celem artykułu jest prezentacja najważniejszych zagadnień dotyczących relacji brytyjsko-rodezyjskich w latach 1961–1979. Rodezja Południowa, formalnie kolonia brytyjska, od zakończenia II wojny światowej dążyła do rozszerzenia swojej niezależności. Konstytucja nadana Rodezji w 1961 r. potwierdzała szerokie uprawnienia administracji wewnętrznej, to jednak władzom Rodezji nie wystarczało. W 1965 r. rząd Iana Smitha ogłosił tzw. jednostronną deklarację niepodległości, co rozpoczęło kryzys w relacjach z Londynem. Długotrwałe negocjacje, naciski międzynarodowe i niestabilna sytuacja w kraju (walki z oddziałami partyzanckimi organizacji wyzwoleńczych, jak ZANU i ZAPU) zmusiły Smitha do ustępstw i rozpoczęcia rozmów z Wielką Brytanią. Skuteczność polityki rządu rodezyjskiego załamała się w 1979 r. Smith musiał wycofać się z życia politycznego. Rok później Rodezja – już jako Zimbabwe – ogłosiła niepodległość, a pierwszym premierem nowego, większościowego rządu został Robert Mugabe, rządzący do listopada 2017 r.
