Abstrakt

Istotną kwestią w badaniu zjawiska jeniectwa w wiekach średnich jest jego merkantylizacja. Jeniectwo miało istotny wymiar ekonomiczny, związany z czerpaniem zysków z okupu. Okup za jeńców stanowił ważną część dochodu z działań wojennych w średniowieczu i zarazem najważniejsze narzędzie w odzyskiwaniu wolności po dłużej lub krócej trwającej niewoli.

Okup, czyli ekwiwalent finansowy za zachowanie jeńca przy życiu i zwrócenie mu wolności, regulowany był (w podstawowym wymiarze prawnym) odgórnie i praktyka korzystania z niego wyraźnie stabilizowała się w wiekach średnich. Instytucjonalizacja dotyczyła także działań prawno-administracyjnych (np. dokumentacji związanej z wydawanymi poświadczeniami wpłacenia okupu).
