Abstract

The author attempts to systematize the problem of gender relations and new technologies using the technique of qualitative research – content analysis. The research aim is to answer the question of how technological artifacts gain a gender perspective. The effect of the analysis is to separate two main views: designers and users of new technologies, who produce gender patterns in a specific way. The first approach refers to artifacts in which gender is created as a result of the application design process, robot, or device. In this case, the gender category takes the form of human characteristics, such as voice, clothing, gestures, or shapes considered as male or female by designers. The second perspective introduces an associative understanding of the gender category, where the production of gender patterns is the result of using technological artifacts. In this case, the devices do not have predetermined gender characteristics, they are described by designers as gender-neutral.
