Abstract

The article presents the events which followed the death of Edward VI on 6 July 1553. The opponents in the struggle for the crown were: the elder sister of the monarch Mary Tudor, and the great-granddaughter of Henry VII – Jane Grey. The claims of Jane were based on the document written by Edward VI My device of succession which coming into force was heavily supported by the Duke of Northumberland. Initially it seemed that the chances of Mary succeeding were not significant. However, due to her determination and energetic actions she managed to gather a vast range of allies. Because of that on 19 July the members of the Privy Council decided to declare Mary the Queen. Then, being aware of widespread desertion from his own army, the Duke of Northumberland decided to give up the resistance against Henry’s VIII daughter. As the result she managed to succeed to the throne without the bloodshed.
