Knowledge and Competences of the Green Technology Firms in Poland

Abstract

The article discusses the issue of the knowledge based competitive advantage of the Polish green technology firms. The purpose of the article is to identify knowledge sources and competences in terms of gaining new knowledge, which are the core of the market success of the researched companies. The research was conducted with the use of qualitative research methods – in‑depth interviews (IDI) and its results determined the sources of the knowledge and competences of the companies and their methods of forming. The results allowed to present the main knowledge and competence sources of the green technology firms in Poland which are structured into pillars: research and development, knowledge about the competition, clients and recipients, market and its potential changes, as well as foreign markets. The companies’ competences are identified in the article which are crucial to the mode of operation of the companies and their strategic goals achievement, such as new technology creation, perfecting of the technology, sales augmentation and market expansion.

Author Biographies

Magdalena Marczewska, University of Warsaw, Faculty of Management, Chair of Organization and Management Theory

Magdalena Marczewska, PhD, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Management, University of Warsaw. She specializes in innovation and technology management, as well as project management with the focus on environmental technologies. She was awarded a doctoral degree in management science with honors research distinction at the University of Warsaw. She is an author of several publications: books, reports, book chapters and articles. She participated in numerous international exchange programs, among others, at the University of Kentucky, London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Padova, University of Ferrara and Lund University. Dr. Marczewska participated in research projects commissioned by the Polish Ministry of Environment, European Union, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Polish Patent Office. Moreover, she managed the research project funded by the National Science Centre (NCN, Poland). She currently works for an export company as specialist for strategy and development. She is also a country expert for the R&I Observatory Network of experts, managed by the European Commission Joint Research Centre. Furthermore, she is an expert representative of the University of Warsaw in the Technical Committee No. 270 for Environmental Management at Polish Committee for Standardization.

Adrianna Jaskanis

Adrianna Jednoralska, PhD, is a researcher at the Faculty of Management, University of Warsaw. She specializes in knowledge management and project management, especially in the context of technology-based firms. Her PhD research project concerned learning factors in small and medium technology enterprises in Poland. She is an author of several publications: book chapters, articles and conference papers. Ms. Jednoralska has participated in research projects commissioned by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Polish Patent Office; Ministry of Environment; and in the project “Corporate Social Responsibility. Employee Perspective” co-financed by the European Union. Ms. Jednoralska holds courses on “Principles of Management” at the Faculty of Management, and also works as a trainer at the Open University of University of Warsaw. Moreover, Ms. Jednoralska is a licensed trainer (license issued by the Foundation for Social and Economic Initiatives) of the Parachute programme for job-hunters and career changers by R. Bolles. Since 2010 she has conducted over 600 hours of Parachute trainings and is placed every year on the “List of recommended Parachute trainers by Foundation for Social and Economic Initiatives”. Since November 2013 Ms. Jednoralska works for Polish Institute of Diplomacy in the field of education and trainings for the employees of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in 2014 she started working at consulting company PwC. Adrianna Jednoralska holds MA in European Studies from University of Warsaw and MA in Business management from Warsaw School of Economics. Within the frames of mobility programmes, she has also studied at the Université Montpellier III – Paul Valéry in France and Université Laval in Quebec City, Canada.
