This article presents a case study of an indebted individual – Leszek, a man in his forties who grew up during the period of political and economic transformation and currently carries substantial debt obligations to banks. The study employed the autobiographical narrative interview technique. The collected material was analyzed in accordance with the principles of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. As a result, general patterns of meaning that the narrator assigns to his life experiences were identified. The analysis distinguished between spaces of freedom (where the narrator experienced meaning and was able to pursue his aspirations) and spaces of necessity (where he was compelled to focus on survival), as well as the process of moving between them, conceptualized as balancing. At a certain stage of the narrator’s life, credit also became one of the means of maintaining this balance. In addition to biographical sociology and hermeneutic phenomenology, the author drew inspiration from existential philosophy.
