Metopism in the contemporary population of Europe

The author collected literature data concerning the incidence of frontal suture in the contemporary and late medieval population of Europe.
Those data are tabulated, giving the size of cach series (N), the number of metopical skulls (n) and their percentage in the group. The author analysed altogether about 230 series, of at least 20 individuals cach; there were 110 series containing more than a hundred skulls cach. As a result of this analysis, the author draws cenclusiens as to the followine problems: sex differences in the frequency of motopism. time-variations of metepism, genetic conditions as well as the influence of environmental factors.
These are the conclusions of discussing the problem: No statistically significant sex differences are found in the incidence of metopism within the groups. Nor is it possible to find any variations in the incidence of metopism between the various chrenological pericds. On the territory of Europe, 3 zones of metopism incidence can be distinguished: a northern and a southern one, with high incidence, and an intermediate zone with lower incidence. It was not possible to relate the incidence of metopism with environmental factors: the isolation degree, the physical and geographical factor and the type of diet.
