Abstract

Based on a random sample of 979 boys and 1038 girls aged 4 to 20 years living in Warsaw average duration of sleep was established. It is about 11.5 hours per day at age 4 years and decreases with age to about 7.5 hours at 20 years. Differences between boys and girls are small (before puberty girls sleep longer, after puberty boys have longer sleeping hours). Polish children sleep more than American ones up to 9 years of age, but their sleep during puberty and adolescence is shorter than that of their American counterparts. Norms of sleep duration are given by the author.
