Abstract

Some authors maintain that the „process of brachycephalization is a result of natural selection operation through differential fertility and mortality. Mortality differences were clearly shown between groups of individuals with different head shapes, but causes of deaths were not known. ‘The present paper is an attempt at explanation of these causes, Among 150 male and 150 female medical students it has been found that individuals with shorter heads suffered significantly more from infectious diseases during childhood than those with longer vity) of brachycephalics to infectious diseases. On. this ground a hypothesis is advanced that in earlier times higher susceptibility of short-headed individuals to infectious diseases resulted in their elimination while with cultural and technological development during several last centuries severity of results of those diseases (especially mortality) decreased which coupled with higher fertility of brachycephalies resulted in proliferation of their genes and rapid course of brachcephalization.
