The role of national identity and religion in building anti-communist opposition. The example of Poland and Germany

This study addresses the issue of the relationship between national identity and religion and the ability of society to build opposition to communist systems. The analysis undertaken in the work concerns, in particular, the Polish nation, the Polish People’s Republic and the German period of the German Democratic Republic as two different examples of social attitudes.
The analysis shows that Poles and Germans, in a historically tricky situation, which was the introduction of the communist system, tended to consolidate national identity around two different concepts: naturalistic-culturalist and constructivist. The first was based on the solid appeal of Poles to ethnos with its whole dimension of spirituality and religiosity as an element uniting society, and the second to demos, understood as submission to the law and authority constituting a guarantee of public order.
This differentiated constructed core of identity became crucial in building anti-communist attitudes in both societies. In the case of the Poles, it resulted in opposition and a strong opposition structure; in the Germans, a tendency to accept and legitimize the actions of the communist authorities. These phenomena, particularly noticeable in the leaders of the Catholic Church in Poland and the Evangelical Church in Germany (Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland), were further strengthened by diversified religious cohesion: strong in Poles and weak in Germans.
