The structural transformation of the popular masses. Cultural change as a blind spot of modernization theory

The article aims to reinterpret the Habermasian concept of the public sphere from two perspectives: 1) in the context of other variants of praxis philosophy (in the works of Gramsci and Bourdieu) as well as the theory of practice in contemporary cultural studies; 2) in the context of the contemporary crisis of liberal democracies, including the growth of populisms (political and cultural) and elitist reaction to them. By referring – critically – to Andreas Reckwitz’s “Society of Singularities”, I try to show that strongly rationalized theories of modernization – as Habermasian – overlooked an important factor of social change: cultural aspects of modernity. The latter, however, went from being tools of social emancipation (in the phase of industrial modernity) to a source of populist hegemony (under the condition of neoliberal-conservative consensus of the so-called “late modernity”).
