About the Journal

Aims and Scope of the Journal 

Multicultural Shakespeare is an international peer-reviewed biannual journal publishing research and reviews in global Shakespearean studies. The journal publishes both thematic and non-thematic issues. We welcome both guest-edited volume proposals as well as individual contributions in various areas of Shakespeare studies. We also publish subject-related book and theatre reviews.

Multicultural Shakespeare appeared in 1972 as Shakespeare Translation upon the initiative of Professor Toshikazu Oyama, the President of Seijo University in Japan. Since then, it has undergone various changes: in 1986 it became Shakespeare Worldwide: Translation and Adaptation, whose editor was Professor Yoshiko Kawachi, and in 2003, it took on its present title. Between 2003 and 2023, it was edited by Professor Yoshiko Kawachi and Professor Krystyna Kujawińska Courtney. Since 2023, the journal's Co-editors-in-chief have been Professor Yoshiko Kawachi and Dr Monika Sosnowska, with Dr Anna Kowalcze-Pawlik serving as a deputy editor. 

First printed in Japan, now published in Poland, Multicultural Shakespeare welcomes co-operation with academics and creatives who make, teach and research theatre and literature, and who are interested in addressing the issues of translating, staging, reading and teaching Shakespeare worldwide.

By the decision of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Multicultural Shakespeare-Translation Appropriation and Performance is included in the list of ranked scientific journals and is currently awarded 70 points.

Review Process

The review process is arranged by a double-blind system. Every article submission is subject to an initial review round by the editorial team, who perform an Ithenticate-based similarity check, and once the initial review is positive, another review round from external reviewers.  Journals of the University of Lodz Press publish articles only after double-blind review, post-language and technical editing. We do not share articles in pre-publication mode.

Submissions are accepted all year round unless a definite deadline is provided in a call for papers. The peer-review process can take between 3 to 6 months. Please note that submissions that demonstrate evident signs of poor quality (e.g. lack of scholarly apparatus, linguistic inadequacy, lack of journal stylesheet) or undisclosed AI involvement will not be sent for review.
