Focus and Scope of the Journal

Studies in Political and Historical Geography (published 2012-2019) are a research periodical (yearbook) in Polish (and extensive summaries of articles in English) presenting the theoretical and empirical issues undertaken in each of the “title” disciplines. Being situated on the border of human, social and natural sciences conditions the interdisciplinary character of the journal profile. It is issued by the Department of Political Geography and Regional Studies, University of Lodz and reflects the scientific profile of the unit as well as the research interests of its members. In the journal one can find the studies and material published by the researchers from the scientific center of Lodz but also by other Polish and foreign centers. They are represented by both authors universally recognized as an authorities of the subjects as well as debutants whose research interests focus on the broadly understood geo-political and geo-historical aspects.

The individual volumes of the journal have a similar internal structure, which consists of the following sections: articles, research notes, reviews and science information.

The journal is addressed to a wide audience: scientists, practitioners responsible for implementing social and economic policies at different levels (local, regional, national), students of geography, history, sociology, political science, and others interested in the geo-political and geo-historical issues.

The individual volumes of the journal are prepared by the two-person editorial board and five thematic editors, representing the following science: geography, history, mathematics, Polish Philology and English Philology. Together with the Scientific Council, composed of representatives of the various disciplines, they carry out the assessment of volumes and thematic proposals for future volumes.

Published papers are subjected to reviews. They present the form of a scientific articles, as well as an essays or other academic materials.

Review Process

The review process is arranged by double-blind system. Every text is subject to at least two reviews.  Journals of University of Lodz are publishing scientific articles only after double-blind review, language and technical edition. We do not share our articles in pre-publication.

Reviewer Responsibilities

Contribution to editorial decisions: peer review assists the editor in making editorial decisions and, through editorial communication with the author, may also assist the author in improving the manuscript.

Promptness: any invited reviewer who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its timely review will be impossible should immediately notify the editor so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.

Confidentiality: any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except if authorized by the editor.

Standards of objectivity: reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is unacceptable. Referees should express their views clearly with appropriate supporting arguments.

Acknowledgement of sources: reviewers should identify any relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any statement that an observation, derivation, or argument was previously reported should be accompanied by a relevant citation. A reviewer should also call to the editor’s attention any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published data of which they have personal knowledge.

Disclosure and conflict of interest: privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider evaluating manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the submission.

Open Access Policy

All articles are published in Open Access and use open license CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 (Attribution – Non-Commercial – No Derivative Works).

The journal has been available in Open Access since 2014 (see: archival issues in the University of Lodz Repository). First issue published in OJS in 2016 (see: Archives).

The Author grants the University of Lodz the non-exclusive proprietary copyrights license for the work in all fields of exploitation listed in Art. 50 of the Act of February 4, 1994 about copyright and related rights, also by an open access (including the rules of the Creative Commons license BY-NC-ND). The license also includes the right for further sublicensing in the aforementioned fields of exploitation. See: Copyright Notice

Due to the implementation of the policy of open access to science works, the University of Lodz uses the Author’s right to deposit the work in the Repository of the University of Lodz and other distribution platforms, and the Author notes not to terminate the license agreement throughout its duration. Personal copyrights are not transferable. Granting the license does not take away the property rights from the author.

License allows to copy and distribute the work in any medium provided an appropriate credit is given – you must provide the name of the creator and attribution parties, a copyright notice, a license notice, a disclaimer notice, and the link to the material, a link to the license, and you must indicate the changes made.

You are allowed to disseminate, present, and search for works only for non-commercial purposes and as long as you go for exploitation. You should not improve the modified content, which has been processed or created from the original new work (derivative work).
