The Labeling of Non-standard Variables

The current study explores the complex status of non-standard language categorization in lexicography, especially the dynamicity and rapid shift of contemporary urban colloquials in the lexicon of contemporary rappers. It challenges the conventional distinction between “standard” and “nonstandard” varieties, foregrounding the dynamism of the non-standard lexicon, particularly on behalf of marginalized groups. Through consideration of the treatment of non-standard words in general and specialist dictionaries, this research is an investigation of the limitations of straitjacketed words like “argot”, “familier”, “populaire”, “péjoratif” and “vulgaire”. They are unable to represent the sociocultural, context-sensitive and constantly changing nature of “non-standard” language. The present paper expounds on how new terms, typically arising out of subcultures like rap, are underdocumented in both general and specialized dictionaries. It defends a lexicographical approach which embraces variation in language and socio-cultural context and transcends the rigid categories in a bid to reflect the real diversity in language.
