Abstract

The main aim of the article is to answer the research question of how the innovative theses of Raphael Lemkin (1900–1959), the father of the concept of genocide and the intellectual patron of the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, may be translated into on a new comprehensive understanding of the Holodomor, the crime of genocide against the Ukrainian nation committed by the authorities of the Soviet Union. The author focuses on the evolution of the perception and assessment of the tragic events of the 1920s and 1930s that took place in the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic, demonstrated in the aftermath of World War II by members of the Ukrainian diaspora in North America, the Ukrainian SSR authorities, and the scientific and political circles in independent Ukraine, through the prism of the concept of the crime of genocide. Moreover, the paper serves as an attempt to analyze the history of Russian-Ukrainian relations and identify the main factors that led the Kremlin to commit the crime of genocide of the Ukrainian nation. In this study, the author used Western and Soviet sources.
