About the Journal

General Information

Text Matters: A Journal of Literature, Theory and Culture, based at the University of Lodz, is an international and interdisciplinary journal, which seeks to engage in contemporary debates in the humanities by inviting contributions from literary and cultural studies intersecting with literary theory, gender studies, history, philosophy and religion. Text Matters was founded and developed by Professor Dorota Filipczak (1963-2021).

Focus and Scope

The journal focuses on textual realities, but contributions related to art, music, film and media studies addressing the text are also invited. Submissions in English should relate to the key issues delineated in calls for articles which will be placed on the website in advance. The journal also features reviews of recently published books, and interviews with writers and scholars whose work has been recognized in the areas addressed in TM. Responses to the articles are more than welcome so as to make the journal a forum of lively academic debate. TM is based in a university in central Poland, but its intercontinental advisory board of internationally renowned scholars makes it possible to connect diverse central perspectives. Text Matters: A Journal of Literature, Theory and Culture is produced by academics from the Institute of English Studies with assistance from the Institute of Polish Studies at the University of Lodz. The journal is published and distributed electronically by Lodz University Press with financial support from the literary departments of the Institute of English Studies. Its digital version is the version of record. Contributions to Text Matters are peer-reviewed (double-blind review).

Number of research articles published in 2023: 24

By the decision of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Text Matters is included in the list of ranked scientific journals and is currently awarded 70 points (January 2024). 

Text Matters publishes articles in the following disciplines: literary studies, cultural and religious studies, art studies.

Review Process

Review process is arranged by double-blind system. Every text is subject to at least two reviews.

The basic license for publishing articles in the journal is CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 (Attribution – Non-Commercial Use – No Derivatives). At the author's request it is possible to publish it under the CC-BY (Attribution) license.
